Can You Move a Stairlift from One House to Another?

Sometimes, yes.

If you’re moving house and already have a stairlift that works well, it makes sense to ask whether it can come with you rather than automatically buying a brand new stairlift.

The answer depends mainly on the type of lift and the staircase in your new property. A straight stairlift is often easier to relocate. A curved stairlift is much more likely to need a new rail, and in some cases replacing the lift will make more sense.

Can a Stairlift Be Removed When You Move House?

Yes. Stairlift Solutions offers professional stairlift removal.

The stairlift rail is fixed securely to the stair treads rather than the wall, so removal is normally straightforward for an experienced engineer. The lift can then either be relocated, bought back where eligible, or removed if it is no longer needed.

We would not recommend removing a stairlift yourself. The chair, carriage, rail and electrical components need to be disconnected and handled properly, particularly if you hope to reuse the lift elsewhere.

Can You Relocate a Straight Stairlift?

A straight stairlift is usually the easiest type to move from one house to another.

That does not mean every straight stairlift will automatically fit the new property.

We would first carry out a site assessment at the new home and look at things such as:

  • The length of the staircase

  • The staircase angle

  • Available width

  • Space at the top and bottom

  • Which side the stairlift needs to run on

  • Doorways or other obstructions

  • Whether the existing model is suitable for the new staircase

If it is suitable, our engineers can advise on removal from the current property and installation at the new one.

Sometimes adjustments or replacement rail parts may be needed. In other cases, changing to a different model may be the better option.

What About Curved Stairlift Relocations?

Curved stairlifts are different because the rail is designed around the bends, landings and shape of a particular staircase.

For that reason, a curved stairlift generally cannot simply be removed from one house and fitted onto a completely different staircase.

For example, the Flow X curved stairlift is typically non-transferable because of its custom-built design.

That does not necessarily mean the whole lift becomes unusable.

Some curved stairlift models can be reconditioned and fitted to another staircase using a brand new rail. Stairlift Solutions currently sells reconditioned curved stairlifts with a new bespoke rail made for the new property.

The best option depends on the model you own.

Does Stairlift Solutions Buy Back Stairlifts?

Yes, in many cases.

If you no longer need your stairlift, Stairlift Solutions offers a buy-back service depending on its age, condition and model.

Straight stairlifts can usually be considered for buy-back, and certain curved models can also be reused.

For curved stairlifts, Stairlift Solutions currently considers models such as Flow, Stannah 260 and Bespoke Infinity for buy-back. The Brooks 180 is different because its modular rail system means Stairlift Solutions does not currently buy that model back.

If a Brooks 180 is no longer needed, Stairlift Solutions can instead remove and dispose of it free of charge.

Because eligibility depends on several factors, the easiest thing to do is contact us with the model, approximate age and condition of the lift.

What Happens During a Stairlift Relocation?

If your existing stairlift looks suitable for the new property, the process usually starts with a survey.

We need to see the new staircase before confirming that relocation is practical.

Once that has been established, the process can include:

  • Removing the stairlift from the current property

  • Checking the lift and its condition

  • Assessing whether any rail work or additional parts are needed

  • Installing it at the new property

  • Carrying out safety checks

  • Testing the lift before handing it back over

The same sort of process may also be useful if a stairlift needs to be temporarily removed during significant decorating, flooring work or other building work.

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Stairlift?

There is no single relocation price because the amount of work varies.

A simple straight stairlift relocation may be relatively straightforward. If the rail needs modifying, parts need replacing or the new staircase is very different, the cost can increase.

Curved stairlifts are more complicated because a new rail will often be required.

Before spending money relocating an older lift, it is also worth comparing that cost with a reconditioned stairlift or a new model. Stairlift Solutions can talk you through the options once we have seen the new staircase.

What If You No Longer Want the Stairlift?

You do not necessarily have to arrange disposal yourself.

Stairlift Solutions offers professional removal and a stairlift buy-back service for suitable models.

Many lifts that are still in good condition can be serviced, reconditioned and reused rather than simply being discarded.

That is also where our range of reconditioned stairlifts comes from. Straight and curved models are inspected, serviced and prepared for installation in another home, where suitable.

A Customer Experience

Stairlift Solutions also helps customers when lifts need to be removed as well as installed.

Karen Kavanagh from Belfast said:

“I would just like to pass on our thanks for the excellent service received recently with the installation and removal of a stairlift. We were very impressed with the prompt and courteous service, and the professionalism of the staff. They went out of their way to assist us and we would recommend them without hesitation.”

Moving House? Ask Us Before Deciding What to Do With the Stairlift

If you’re moving home, don’t assume the existing stairlift has to stay behind or go to waste.

A straight stairlift may be suitable for relocation. A curved stairlift may need a new rail, while another option could be to use Stairlift Solutions’ buy-back service and install a different lift at the new property.

Our experienced team can assess the current lift, look at the staircase in your new home and explain the most practical option.

You can contact Stairlift Solutions or call 028 9188 2249 to discuss stairlift relocation, removal or buy-back.
