Do Stairlifts Use a Lot of Electricity?

No. Modern stairlifts are designed to be energy efficient, and their electricity usage is relatively low.

The lift itself runs from rechargeable batteries rather than drawing mains electricity every time it moves. Those batteries are topped up when the stairlift is parked at its charging points, so the main energy consumption comes from keeping the batteries charged.

That also means a stairlift can usually keep working for a period during a power cut.

How Much Electricity Does a Stairlift Use?

The exact amount of electricity a stairlift uses will vary depending on the model, how often it is used and how the charging system works.

In normal use, though, the running costs are low compared with many household appliances.

A stairlift is only travelling for short periods at a time, and the rechargeable batteries provide the power for each journey. When the lift is parked, the charger uses a small amount of electricity to keep those batteries ready for use.

So while energy prices have increased in recent years, a stairlift should not result in very high running costs, compared to other applicances.

How Is a Stairlift Powered?

Most modern stairlifts are battery powered.

The batteries sit inside the stairlift carriage and are charged from your home’s mains electricity. On many Stairlift Solutions models, charging points are located at the top and bottom of the stairs, so the batteries automatically recharge when the stairlift is parked correctly.

This setup means the stairlift does not need to draw full mains power while it is travelling.

Models such as the Brooks 130 use rechargeable batteries and automatically charge when parked at the charging points.

Does a Stairlift Work During a Power Cut?

Yes, in most cases.

Because the stairlift runs from its batteries, a temporary power cut does not normally stop it immediately. If the batteries are in good condition and fully charged, the lift should continue to operate for a period without mains electricity.

How many journeys you can make during a power cut will vary depending on the model, battery condition and how long the power is off, so there is no single figure that applies to every stairlift.

The important thing is to leave the stairlift switched on and parked at a charging point during normal use so the batteries stay charged.

The Flow X curved stairlift also uses battery power and can continue to operate during a temporary loss of mains electricity.

Should You Leave a Stairlift Plugged In?

Yes.

Stairlifts are designed to remain connected to the power supply so the rechargeable batteries can stay charged.

There is no need to switch the stairlift off at the wall every night to save electricity. Doing that regularly can actually leave the batteries undercharged and reduce battery life.

When the stairlift is parked in its normal charging position, the system manages the charging automatically.

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Stairlift?

The exact cost to run a stairlift depends on the model, your electricity tariff and how often the lift is used.

What matters most is that stairlifts are low-power mobility solutions. They only operate for short periods, and the mains supply is primarily used to keep the batteries charged.

That means the electricity cost is generally small compared with many household appliances that run for long periods or use a much higher amount of power.

If you are comparing running costs before choosing a stairlift, it is better to ask about the specific model rather than rely on one general figure.

Does Using the Stairlift More Often Increase the Electricity Bill?

A little, but usually not by much.

More journeys mean the batteries need to be recharged more often, so energy usage will increase slightly with heavier use.

However, stairlift journeys are short and the batteries do most of the work. Even if the lift is used several times a day, the increase in electricity consumption is normally modest.

For people with mobility issues who rely on the lift throughout the day, this is one of the benefits of a battery-powered system.

How Long Do Stairlift Batteries Last?

Battery life varies.

How long the batteries last will depend on the stairlift model, how often it is used, whether it is left on charge correctly and the overall condition of the battery.

Over time, rechargeable batteries lose capacity and eventually need to be replaced. Regular servicing can help identify batteries that are no longer holding charge properly before they become a problem.

There is no need to replace batteries on a fixed timetable if they are still performing properly.

What Happens When the Batteries Need Replacing?

Stairlift batteries are service items and can be replaced when necessary.

If the lift starts behaving differently, struggling to hold charge or displaying a fault, the batteries may be one of the things an engineer checks.

Stairlift Solutions can inspect the lift, test the batteries and replace them where required using suitable replacement batteries for the model.

Are Stairlifts Energy Efficient?

Yes. Their battery-powered design is one of the reasons modern stairlifts have relatively low electricity usage.

They do not need to run a large motor directly from the mains for extended periods. Instead, they make short journeys using rechargeable batteries, then top those batteries back up when parked.

That keeps both energy consumption and running costs relatively low.
