Does a Stairlift Need to be Plugged in?

Yes. A stairlift needs to be connected to mains electricity so its rechargeable batteries can stay charged.

The important bit is that the stairlift itself runs from those batteries rather than directly from the mains. That is why modern stairlifts can usually keep working for a period during a power cut.

How Does a Stairlift Get Its Power?

The batteries sit inside the stairlift carriage and provide the power that moves the lift up and down the stairs.

When the stairlift is parked at its usual charging point, the battery charger tops the batteries back up using your home’s mains electricity.

On many models, those charging points are at the top and bottom of the stairs. Certain models use slightly different charging systems, but the principle is much the same.

There is no long power cable travelling up and down the staircase with the chair.

Does a Stairlift Need to Stay Plugged in?

Yes, under normal use it should stay connected to the mains supply so the batteries can recharge properly.

You do not need to switch it off at the wall after every journey. In fact, regularly disconnecting the charger can leave the batteries undercharged.

The best thing to do is leave the stairlift switched on and make sure it is parked in the correct position for charging.

If you are unsure where that is on your particular model, check the user manual or ask one of our engineers.

What Happens in a Power Cut?

Because the lift is battery powered, a temporary power outage does not normally stop it straight away.

If the batteries are fully charged and in good condition, the stairlift should continue to operate for a period after the mains electricity goes off.

How long that lasts will vary depending on the model, the condition of the batteries and how often the lift is used while the power is off.

Once the power returns, the battery charger should begin recharging the batteries again when the lift is parked at the charging point.

For more information, see what happens to a stairlift in a powercut.

What If the Stairlift Is Not Charging Properly?

A stairlift that is not charging properly will usually give some kind of warning.

Depending on the model, that could be a beep, warning light or message on the display.

The first thing to check is whether the stairlift is sitting in the correct position at the charging point. You can also check that the mains switch has not been turned off accidentally.

If the stairlift keeps beeping or showing a warning even though it appears to be parked correctly, it is worth getting a stairlift engineer to take a look.

The issue could be the charger, a charging contact, the power supply or the batteries themselves.

With Stairlift Solutions you can be assured of a 5 year warranty and 24/7 support on the off chance that anything goes wrong.

How Long Do Stairlift Batteries Last?

Battery life varies depending on the stairlift model, usage and how well the batteries are kept charged.

Old batteries can gradually lose capacity, which may show up as slower movement, shorter journeys or difficulty holding charge.

Regular servicing helps identify battery problems before they become more serious.

There is no single replacement interval that applies to every stairlift, so we would rather test the batteries and replace them when needed than work from one fixed timescale.

What Happens When the Batteries Need Replacing?

Stairlift battery replacement is a normal part of long-term stairlift maintenance.

If the batteries are completely drained and no longer able to hold charge, or if testing shows that their capacity has dropped too far, they may need to be replaced.

A Stairlift Solutions engineer can inspect the lift, test the batteries and fit suitable replacement batteries for the specific model.

If new batteries are needed, we can explain the cost before any work is carried out.

Do All Stairlifts Work the Same Way?

Most modern stairlifts are battery powered, but charging systems can vary between models.

For example, the Brooks 130 Slimline uses rechargeable batteries and charges when parked at its charging points.

The Flow X curved stairlift also uses rechargeable batteries and can continue operating during a temporary power failure.

Other models in the Stairlift Solutions range use similar battery-powered systems, although the charging setup and battery specification can differ.

Does an Acorn Stairlift Need to be Plugged in?

Yes. Acorn stairlifts also use rechargeable batteries and need a mains-powered charger to keep them topped up.

Stairlift Solutions may occasionally supply or work with Acorn stairlifts, particularly reconditioned models, but the exact charging arrangement depends on the specific type and model.

Keep the Stairlift on Charge

The simplest way to look after stairlift batteries is to leave the lift switched on, keep it connected to the mains and park it in the correct charging position when it is not being used.

That helps keep the batteries fully charged and reduces the chance of them becoming completely drained during long periods of inactivity.

If you notice warning lights, unusual beeping, slower movement or the lift stopping after a short distance, it is worth getting it checked.

Need Help With a Stairlift Battery or Charging Problem?

If your stairlift is not charging properly, the batteries are getting old, or you are not sure whether the problem is with the charger or the lift itself, Stairlift Solutions can help.

Our engineers can check the power source, charging points, batteries and general condition of the stairlift, then advise on servicing or battery replacement if needed.

You can contact Stairlift Solutions for advice or to arrange a service visit.
